Music Director

Oliver Brett is assistant director of music of St. Mary’s Cathedral and director of the St. Mary’s Singers.  Born in Kent in the UK in 1985, he was educated as a music and academic scholar at Tonbridge School and then as organ scholar at King’s College, Cambridge from where he graduated in 2007 with a degree in music.  He then spent a year as organ scholar of Westminster Cathedral and in the Summer term 2008 he was acting director of music of the choir school.  From September 2008 to April 2009 he was assistant director of music and organist of Felsted School in Essex as well as director of music of St. Philip’s Church, Earls Court Road in London.  Before moving to Australia, he spent two years as assistant organist of Durham Cathedral and assistant director of music at the Chorister School, Durham.  His organ teachers have included Sarah Baldock, Thomas Trotter, David Briggs and Dame Gillian Weir.

As a recitalist, Oliver has performed across five continents.  Whilst organ scholar of King’s College, Cambridge, Oliver was heard by millions worldwide when he played for the 2007 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.  He has performed in venues such as the Concertgebouw, Amsterdam; the Royal Albert Hall, London; the Seoul Arts Centre in South Korea; the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore; the Istanbul International Music Festival; concerts in Scandinavia; the Baltic States; the festival of sacred music in Ecuador; and venues across the USA.

Increasingly in demand as a teacher, Oliver has taught on courses in England and Australia, including the inaugural Sydney Summer Organ Academy.
